The news of the past few days has been unbearable. The NY Times front page photo of grieving mourners at

the funeral of an Israeli soldier, no doubt very young and much loved , is tragic. But soldiers are carrying out the Israeli government's policy of targeting homes, schools, hospitals, basic infrastructure and therefore killing civilians, families and children. Gaza is rapidly turning into Israel's Warsaw ghetto. Cutting off electricity will kill the most vulnerable: infants and the very old. One thinks of the 1995 Chicago heat wave during which 750 mostly poor and elderly people died over a five day period because they were locked inside their homes without air conditioning and windows closed for fear of intruders. The current death toll -- 1,355 Palestinians, most of them civilians and 59 Israelis, most of them soldiers --will only get worse. This is not a just war.

החמאס הצהיר שברגע שהמצור יוסר האש תיפסק. גם הביקורת העולמית מדברת על המצור והגבלת הדייג. הנוכחות שלנו בחייהם של הפלסטינים, כעילת הביקורת. כולם יודעים שלבסוף נעשה את כל אלה. אז למה כל שפיכות הדמים?

די . לצאת. המצב לא פתיר כרגע. להסיר את המצור מעזה, להפסיק את הכיבוש שעדיין קיים, וללכת משם. ולחשוב. שפיכות הדמים משני הצדדים לא מקדמת אותנו בכלום.
